Bullitt County's 300 square miles straddle the outer Bluegrass and the Knobs regions of Kentucky. Much of the county is hilly, with level land mostly in and along the flood plains of its rivers and streams. The Salt River, Floyd's Fork, and Rolling Fork River, flowing into the Ohio River, are the main drainages. Early on the county was notable for its mineral resources, first for a thriving salt industry and later for production of iron from its widespread ore deposits.
